Superfood
Dec 22, 2021Why wander far and wide when good things are so close by? :0)
We talk about superfoods a lot nowadays. What does that mean?
The definition: Superfood is a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.
I'd like to share some simple ways you can add more superfoods to your daily diet. Walnuts, flax seeds and turmeric are superfoods I use daily. I use flax seeds and/or walnuts in the morning for my Müesli, walnuts or turmeric within my healthy snack and for topping and seasoning my meals.
These foods are easily available in any grocery store and and when I use them frequently, they don't get spoiled.
Try it out, replace the less nutritious foods and toppings with these 3 superfoods for two weeks and see how you feel.
Let's take a closer look at these superfoods...
Walnuts
Walnuts are a wonderful snack alternative to chocolate and Christmas cookies.
In addition to vitamins and minerals, walnuts contain a high proportion of essential amino acids, which have anti-inflammatory effects. The essential amino acid tryptophan can be converted into serotonin in the body and has a mood-enhancing effect. Serotonin = Happy Hormones!
Flaxseeds
Flaxseed is one of the oldest crops and has been used since the old ages. It is high in minerals and vitamins and provides a good amount of proteins, fibre and omega 3 fatty acids. When you're vegetarian or vegan, flaxseeds are a good daily choice for your omega 3 intake. Ground flaxseed is easier to digest and the body can absorb more nutrients.
Daily intake of one tablespoon of flaxseed is linked to the prevention of heart diseases.
Turmeric
Don't wait until you get a cold. One of my favourite winter drinks is Hot Turmeric / Orange Punch (see recipe below), and I use turmeric daily with my stews and soups. The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-cancer effects and eliminates heavy metals from the body.
In order for the body to better absorb the turmeric, I use the piperine of black pepper or heat the turmeric in a pan beforehand.
Recipe: Hot Turmeric / Orange Punch (big cup)
- Squeeze a fresh orange
- Add hot water
- 1/4 - 1/2 tablespoon of Curcuma (turmeric)
- Add some fresh shredded ginger
- top with black pepper (to better absorb the curcumin in the body)
